Skin Cancer Symptoms
The most common symptom of skin cancer is changes that happen in your skin. this could be in the form of new growth or changes in an already existing growth or mole. Any abnormal skin growth that does not go away could be an early sign of skin cancer. At times they may appear as nodules, rash, or even an irregular patch on the surface of the skin. these spots could also ooze or bleed very easily. The shape and size of the mass may change as cancer grows deeper into the layers of the skin. Biopsy and imaging tests are the two most common methods used to diagnose skin cancers.
There are three main types of skin cancer:
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Melanoma
Basal cell carcinoma symptoms:
This type of skin cancer develops in the basal cells. These are the cells that are at the bottom of the epidermis which is the outer layer of skin. Basal cell carcinoma can appear as a sore that does not heal for a week or ten days, pink growth that has an elevated border and indented center, red patch that may itch, crust, or bleed easily.
Squamous cell carcinoma:
This kind of cancer is mostly found in body parts that are exposed to the sun. They can also occur on the inside of the mouth and genitals. Squamous cell carcinoma appears in different forms such as scaly red or flesh-toned patches that bleed. Open sores that crust bleed and don’t heal. Wart-like growths that crust and bleed. this form of cancer can cause tenderness and intense itching.
Melanoma:
This kind of cancer can develop anywhere in the body including the eye. The “ABCDE” method helps to determine if a freckle or mole may be melanoma.
A: Asymmetrical
Cancerous moles tend to be asymmetrical, meaning one-half of the cancerous mole looks different from the other.
B: Border
Raised or notched borders could be a sign of cancer.
C: Change in Color
Any variation in color may be an indication of cancer. Colors such as tan, black, red, white, blue, or brown should not be ignored.
D: Diameter
Any mole or freckle that is larger than 6millimeters in diameter can be a sign of cancer.
E: evolving
Any changes in color or size of existing moles or new moles and freckles.
Exposure to harsh pollutants, sun exposure, age, and a weakened immune system are some of the risk factors for developing skin cancer.
