There are many types of Bladder Cancers. The type of cancer is determined based on the type of the bladder cells that become carcinogenic before multiplying, and where they started. Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) is one of the most commonly found type in Bladder Cancers. About 95% of Bladder Cancers are contributed to, by TCC.
Understanding the type of cancer is very crucial to understand the work towards the initial treatment before the cancer can advance any further.
There are 3 main types of Bladder Cancers besides other rare categories are as below.
Squamous cell carcinoma: While this type is similar to tumors arising in other organs of the body, the diagnosis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the bladder is done only when the tumor is composed of the squamous cell component. There will also be no conventional urothelial carcinoma component.
Papillary carcinoma: These tumors are finger-like projections arising from the carcinogenic bladder cells, long and slender from the inner lining of the bladder, towards its center. Sometimes, these tumors are not malignant but are just lumps or masses of cells. They neither shrink nor grow. They are not harmful. In other severe cases, these tumors affect the urothelial cells where bladders contain a pool of urine that is obstructed from entering the urethra.
Transitional Cell Carcinoma: The most common tumor in the entire urinary system, it is mostly caused due to overexposure to chemicals in a chemical factory, etc. Exposure to tar, coal, and asphalt could also be the reason for the formation of such tumors. A complete physical exam along with a urine sample is a part of the prognosis procedure. In the case of asymptomatic cancers, or the initial stages, a complete urine picture is done to understand the presence of any blood, cancer cells, or any bacteria in the urine. The exact location of these cancer cells is a crucial factor in determining the stage of the cancer and the treatment to be practiced.
